Lili Elbe

The story of Lili Elbe is a peculiar story about a man who underwent the first operation in the world in 1930 to become a woman. It's about an open-minded couple who became sexual pioneers and a man who had the courage to go against the norms.

Lili Elbe was born a man, by the name of Einar Wegener. He got married and had a wife, Gerda Wegener. The two of them were artists, Gerda was a good painter and photographer and was more popular than her husband at the time. The two of them had always had a good relationship were Gerda was understanding and supportive of her husband, always by his side no matter how hard the circumstances were.

In the twenties, Denmark was at the time somewhat open, sexuality and women's right-wise. The suffragettes were parading in the city for women's right to vote and the gay community was half-visibly present in certain areas of the capital.

The event that triggered it all happened to be Gerda, who by the time often used female models for her paintings, asking her husband to don stockings and a dress because she thought his hips and legs looked so much nicer than those of her models and society-wives who often modelled for her. By Einar, merely putting on women's clothing, was enough to flip a switch inside of him that he never had thought about flipping before. From that day on, when the young couple would go out with friends or to parties, Einar would from time to time dress in women's clothes, for the fun of it.

Even though Denmark was open to a certain point, several people pointed fingers at them, laughing at them. So the couple had no choice than to move to Paris where people were even more open minded towards subject of these matters.

In Paris, when they first settled down, Gerda became a fashion illustrator in the city and nobody knew them at first. It even came as far as people laughing at Einar, when the couple went for walk along the Seine, because they thought it was ridiculous for a woman to wear men's clothing. After incidents like those, Einar went to wearing womens clothing on a more regular basis, taking the name of Lili Elbe.

Lili Elbe fit in perfectly on the Parisian scene. She often spoke her mind and her charms even had several men proposing marriage to her, all of which she refused. Because she still had no inner calm. She would often take nocturnal walks, contemplating suicide because it felt like two persons battling it out inside her body. She knew that there wasn't room for both of them and eventually one had to go away or they would both have to perish.

Doctors offered no answer when the couple went to see them. They claimed that Lili Elbe was either going out of her mind or quite simply, a homosexual. It wasn't until later that a German docotr, who researched in hormones had an answer that Lili could use. By running tests, he could see that her body contained more female hormones than the usual and said that Lili was a woman inside and that he probably had the answer to that. When Lili heard that she thrust herself into the doctors mercy, allowing him to do whatever to her so that she could become complete.

Unfortunately, surgical procedures were not advanced at the time. And what was a transforming procedure might very well have been a simple castration.

Lili Elbe with her nurse after the first surgery.

But it didn't stop there. Because the thing that she wanted the most was to be able to give birth one day and fully become a woman. So she underwent another surgery that was supposed to inject ovaries into her abdomen, removed from a healthy young woman.

When she complained about pains in the abdomen, the doctor had to remove the tubes and ovaries that her body had rejected. But she never lost hope. When Gerda and Lili's marriage was annulled by the King of Denmark, she even accepted a marriage proposal but within short time she died of the infections caused by the complications of the surgery.

When she was buried, written on her tombstone was her female name: Lili Elbe, after her dying wish.

In the light of my last entry on Haruna Ai, I researched the topic and decided to write about the first transsexual operation in the world and the person who gave her life for it. I don't think it's possible for me to fully understand the inner conflicts that transsexuals experience and the hardships that they have to go through. I think that Lili Elbe was a very courageous human being that put words into action. To want something that much that you're willing to die for it is admirable and passion in true form. I wonder if I will ever be able to experience want and passion of this measure...

Haruna Ai

I've watched many a clip of her on youtube, performing or participating in other Japanese tv-shows. I thought she was really pretty like most Japanese tarentos. Sure she had a very husky voice but hey, not all girls can have super feminine high pitched voices, right? I know I sure don't!

It wasn't until I read the news that it fell into place for me. Haruna Ai is the first Japanese to ever win "Miss International Queen" a transgender beauty pageant held in Pattaya, Thailand. She was crowned Miss International Queen 2009 in November. Prize consisting of 10.000$, a gift certificate for surgery and a one year stay at Pattaya Hotel.

I must say that at 37, she looks really good. But then again, asians tend to look younger than their age. I almost find it unfair how pretty she looks. Haha!

I think it's great that Thailand is one of the frontrunners when it comes to acceptance of transgendered but I'm also at the same time saddened, knowing that so many asian countries do not keep an open mind when it comes to that topic. Discrimination towards transgendered people is very much a discerning factor in large parts of asia. I think it's sad that the East seems to be so far behind when it comes to opening up and being less prejudical. One can only hope for a better future.

EOTD with one eyeshadow

Hey Lovelies! ^_^

Wow, how on earth DO I come up with these inventive titles. What can I say, I'm on a roll!^^

I found this gorgeous muted eyeshadow from Anna Sui and on the box it said grey/green. However I found this e/s to be a beautiful mix of grey/green/golden. With eyeshadows like these it really cuts down on application time. Perfect for when I can't haul my lazy self out of bed in the morning.

I just lightly washed over my lids with that color. I kid you not! The camera does NOT do this e/s justice. It's really pretty and the gold shimmers in the light. *sigh* I love this :)

Mascara on lashes and a beautiful, peachy pink lipgloss to complement the eyes.

Thanks for looking! ^^

EOTD with 2 colors only

Hey Lovelies ^_^

Seems like ages since I last did an EOTD so here I go again.

I wanted todo something not overly dramatic but something that can be used during the day as well as evening.

On eyes:
I lightly washed the inner corners with a light shimmery pink e/s
On outer mobile eyelid and extending upwards and outwards I applied a green/grayish e/s.

Mascara on upper lashes and lightly rimming eyes with khôl, focusing on outer parts of the eyes.

Et voilà!

Thanks for looking!

New haircut

Hey Lovelies ^^

Long time no blog, I've just been superbusy and there were a few incidents that took up a lot of my time. Hopefully I'm back now and will be blogging on a more regular basis. ( I HOPE!)

So, to kickstart my return to blogging I decided to post some pics of my new haircut. As usual, I asked my hairdresser to do her "thang" and surprise me. My eyes were glued to the magazines all the time and when I looked up after hearing a "TADA, you're done" I had to take a second look at myself.

I haven't sported bangs since I was 7 years old and mind you, (to those of you who have seen my "Ugly Duckling"-entry they were cut by my mom and crooked so that scared me off bangs for 19 years until my hairdresser decided to give me some.

To be really honest, I don't know about this haircut yet. I think I have to get used to it. Let me know what you think ladies, (and gentlemen?) is it YAY or NAY to this one?

Thanks for looking! ^_^

Quick update

YES! I got the shoes from Jimmy Choo for H&M but I'll do an entry on that later after I prance around a little more in my new heels. Yes, my sister and I had to get up at 4.30 am but it was worth it to be #9 and 10 in line for the accesories and shoes. The blue dress was pretty fab but I knew I wanted to go specifically for the shoes and I got the 3 pairs that I wanted.

Pictures and more on my day in a later entry...

You don't MOVE a national monument, or do you?

I'm writing this entry because for the World EXPO in Shanghai next year, the Danish designers of the nordic pavillion decide to temporarily relocate our beloved "little mermaid" so that she could be the centerpiece of the Danish decoration. Furthermore, water from the Danish harbour will also be n display around her. I guess regular Chinese water won't do when the designers have made up their mind about everything being Danish and most importantly that we do not lose the "Danish feel"

How on earth did they come up with that idea in the first place? Physically moving a national monument out of it's place and transport it to another country. Somewhre it just doesn't seem right in my eyes but then again, I'm just another citizen among many.

Yes, I can definetely see it from another viewpoint that by moving her to China also gives not only the mermaid but also the kingdom of Denmark a lot of exposure. Say, if we get 1 million tourists per year to come then by taking her to the world expo means that she could be viewed by aprox. 70 million people. Yes, I get that it's a wonderful opportunity especially for people who aren't fortunate to go travelling or go to Denmark to get to see her. It's clearly also a sign of goodwill to be taking an original monument to another country to improve on international relations.

But I give you here the other options that tourists will have, should they happen to be in Copenhagen next year from May to October:

This statue is made by sculptor Anne-Marie Carl-Nielsen, wife of composer Carl Nielsen and will be replacing the little mermaid but she will be situated in front of the Royal library instead. It's an interesting figure, the eyes are wide open, almost panicking and her mouth looks like she's gasping for air.

In case you didn't know, there are many canals around Copenhagen and right next to a bridge in the canal are these stone figures from the old poem/song: Agnete and the merman.

It shows the woman Agnete with her husband and their 7 children dancing around in the water, at night it's illuminated and for people who don't know about it, it can be a weird vision. The first time I thought someone had jumped in and they had sunk to the bottom, mind you I was 7 years old. So I do not have the fondest memories when it comes to this one.

Last but not least only a 10-minute walk from where the original mermaid is situated, there is a small square called the genetically modified paradise. In the water of the quay there is the result of Bjørn Nørgaards mermaid. Quite interesting, I'll have to take some more pictures of the statues around but for now I only have a pic of the mermaid.

So if you're thinking about coming to Denmark next year don't expect to see THE mermaid, instead there will be these other options available shown above. But then again Denmark isn't just about a statue...or is it?

As for me, I still think it's weird just moving a monument but then again, maybe I just need some time to wrap my head around it...
