Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark has been voted the best city in the world to live in by the lifestyle magazine: Monocle. According the the feinschmecker magazine, there are numerous reasons why Copenhagen has gone from second to first place in a year, swapping positions with Munich.
I'm surprised at the results of this vote, I guess it takes someone else to see it from a different perspective in order to find it so amazing. Maybe I'm just used to living here...or maybe I see certain things as well, things that a foreigner/tourist might not see. But yeah... reading this article made me remember the wonderful things about this city and made me appreciate it. That was a good reminder because if someone doesn't tell you, then how am I supposed to remember that I live in the best city in the world? Kind of like the trees in the forest... Read on for the contents...
The low murder rate of only 6 murders per year are one of the reasons they state. It's also of great importance that in 2006 54.9% of the garbage were recycled and that 5000 new firms emerge per year placed Denmark in 5th place over innovative countries in the world.
High tolerance also plays a part and the magazine notes that we have an active equal rights policy and that since 1989 it has been possible for gay couples to have registered partnerships.
It's not easy finding the nicest city and that's why several writers themselves from Monocle are visiting the 40 different qualified cities. They state that they loved intellect, humor and great looks of the inhabitants of Copenhagen. Tyler Brûlé, chief editor at Monocle said that it was lovely walking the streets of Copenhagen, to see all the happy, good looking people. "It only takes 5 minutes to bike to the nearest park and it's possible to bathe in the harbor. Actually it's almost as if the city was DESIGNED to live in!"
Of course Denmark is internationally known for it's design as well as designers and they help raise the standard of living. The metro are one of the most important reasons why Denmark came in first this year. Being able to get of the plane and take the train/metro directly to ones destination without further obstacles is one tests passed. When you're downtown you can also enjoy the most qualified barista-scene north of Italy as well as enjoy interior and art innovation, awesome drinks and cocktails and wonderful food culture.
The winning part is that Copenhagen is not that big a city, it's cosy and intimate and everything is within walking distance or biking. And he loves the fact that we have a culture that allows us to be able to leave the baby stroller outside a store while we go inside to shop - with the baby still inside stroller!
A recent survey showed that Danish people were the happiest people in the world...why shouldn't we be? Apparently now, we also have the best city in the world to live in!

How's the work there? I mean employment rate. I think I'm going to move there. I'm currently in the US. How much is rent per month? Thanks.
It's all very well Monocle saying Copenhagen is the best city in the world to live in, but, as a resident of Copenhagen, what is your take?? ;)
Haha, sure thing Aradani!
Rent is not low, you'd be surprised at how much it costs to live in the best cuy in the world. Everything has its costs...
surprised I guess... ut reading that artile just confirmed some of the my thoughts on the cuty and well, it's not easy for a foreigner seeing every aspect of a cuty. That's all I have to say.
ooh u must be very proud of your city! let's NOT talk about milan...
how is that cool to live in the best city in the world?! lucky you! ^_^
LOL, just edited with the 2008 list. I know that Seyoung will be happy to see #25! :)
yea i saw that list a while ago...
the city i live isn't on the list..... but still I think i live in a great city because it's so mix...hehe :P
note to self go to Denmark. clearly NYC is not on the list for obvious reasons. But hey there's never a dull moment here :P
oh man..u make me wanna live there....
I heard that yall get free healthcare. Do yall have to wait in line to get mediocre service or do they actually do a good job? cuz i had the thought that since yall aren't paying anything, that the doctors might not have an incentive to do their work properly >.>
You said the housing rent is...quite costly, but is the house you get "worth the money" so to speak..? like, is it like new york where you pay like freakin $1million to get this TINY apartment?
are there constantly tons of activities and stuff..? how about food expense and clothing expense...can you give an approximate USD estimate of the avg money u spend on food daily ish?
sorry Chi for asking you so many questions--but I am really curious! I don't know where I'll end up in the future--location wise, and I'd like to keep an open mind, and Denmark is now in my mind, especially with that low crime rate! Where I live, there is LITERALLY like 6 murders PER WEEK or PER MONTH. it's ridiculous. Most of them don't make it on the news on tv, but there's enough to hear a shooting every other day at my place @_@. My place, you leave a baby out, not only will the child be stolen, but it'll probably be sexually harrassed/raped, and stuffed in a container and dumped into the beach-bay, like it has happend numerous times before already. x.x
lucky girl. i want to live in the best city in the world. to be honest, i never knew that such a list existed. o_0 LOL. very cool though. :)
oh that's cool, I wanna visit! lol ic Los Angeles isn't on that list, I guess cause our crime rate is way too high
The appartments are decent, you get what you pay for A few years back we had this upward going curve on the housing situation but it's settled now. Food is more expensive than in the U.S but we acceot that. Whenever we're verseas we always like the cheap prices on food and such. Clothes are in the same price range as anywhere in the world I guess. As for the cost of food...well, depends on how well you want to eat. You can survive on 500 dkk (aprox. 100$) per month if you eat pasta and bread and don't eat out. But for decent meals and good food, more like the double. Yeah...healthcare and education are for free. It's all part of the high taxes, but nobody complains. Whenever we go to te hospital or see a doctor we don't have to pay anything. Private schools are ecpensive but public schools, high school and third degree education are for free for us danes. I hope that answered your questions. Feel free to ask if you have more!
Portland, Oregon is heaven on earth and it's #25. I can only imagine how awesome Copenhagen is!!
yay melbourne is no.9 XD
