Weather...

Two days ago I wake up to a sun that's shining only to be replaced by, and I kid you not people, awhole day and evening of blizzard! What's going on? I mean we ARE in the middle of March, right?

Yesterday it only snowed for an hour or so in the evening but the bad thing is that due to this sudden change of weather my skin has become dry. I notice it on my body, my hands especially but there are some dry patches on my face as well. A few patches on my forehead and cheek. Also that annoying area above your upper lip, under and around your nose. That area is flaking like I've never seen before! I had to go out today so I put on serum, moisturizer and added concealer and foundation. I just think that the concealer made the flakiness even more evident.

Anyone else experience this? I'm going to exfoliate and do a moisture mask tonight but if it doesn't help, then I'm out of ideas. Anyone have any ideas? I'd take a picture and show you but as my camera seems to be hiding from me at the moment I guess there will be none of that. -_-

Awwwwww, as someone that's been plagued by dry skin for years, I know what you're talking about! The European winters can be so damning on the skin - I use up a bottle of baby oil every two weeks during this season!

What I do whenever my skin is drier than usual is to exfoliate (gently!!! I use a pineapple and papaya scrub) then use a rich moisturising mask. I usually use a cream mask (doesn't dry off) and sometimes I use the cloth type. Whatever the kind, be sure NOT to leave it on for too long. Then after I wash the mask off, I use a hydrating toner and then a rich cream moisturiser. I do this, save for exfoliation, for a few days straight, and depending on how much moisture has returned to my skin, I use the mask less frequently (from every day to twice a week to once a week). As for the body, I slap on baby oil right after a shower, while my body is still slightly wet. I also use less shower gel and less hot water.

Also, during this period, I stay away from any powder product for my face, and when I'm out, I carry a little jar of moisturiser with me (mainly for my cheeks and nose), a tube of hand cream, and of course Labello. And whenever possible, when I'm indoors, I place a cup/bowl of water next to the radiator for humidity. You can also try a humidifier (I'm too cheap to get one!).

I hope that helps!

I've actually experienced this a couple years ago. But it wasn't snowing...hehe. My dryness came from the topical acne meds that I used. As for my face, I just moisturized twice a day. Dry patches such as my nose area, I would apply petroleum jelly. For my hands, I used aquaphor. Hope this helps!

i get that problem with my skin a lot with the Canadian weather, but am still searching for a solution to the problem. Moisture mask sounds about right, and also remember to drink tons of water :)

Don't exfoliate if your skin is chapped though. If its just dry (not chapped) then its ok. But chapped skin should just be left alone to heal first.

Awww I'm sorry <3 The weather here has been rain rain rain! I've been dealing with a long ass migraine since Sunday, hence the less desires of want/need to wear any makeup :( Hope your skin gets better. I'd take snow any day over rain lol

try an oil to moisturize. jojoba oil is great for this purpose, because its a dry oil meant to mimic the natural oil your face secretes. bio oil also works well. neither will make you break out. and yeah...exfoliate exfoliate exfoliate! my skin is going through something similar too, bleh

Whenever I'm in Taiwan or Japan, then my skin is almost perfect thanks to the humidity.

Thanks for all the tips you guys, I want a humidifier but I don't think they're selling them here in Denmark. -_-

poor chi~

cetaphil thick cream for the face,
aquafor for elsewhere... basically vaseline.

no humidifier? ... this is old skool ghetto asianness right hea - get an old hand towel (a thinner one works best). get it damp with warm water and hang it by the head of your bed before you go to sleep(you dont want the towel soaking wet). it may drip so i try to lay a towel or have something underneath to catch any excess. itll dry overnight and keep the air around you moister than without.

wait, why doesnt denmark have humidifiers? ... are they illegal? o.O

I'd try Aquaphor if that's available in Denmark. Or a cortizone cream/ointment. I could tell you stories about "dry" spots on my upper/lower lips. Um... I had atopic eczema as an adolescent allllll over my lips, eyes, ears and most of my body.

hi chi, to add humidity in your home, u can warm a pan of water over the stove & just let the whoel thing evaporate slowly. i suggest a eucerin moisturizer, but exfoliating definitely's not a good idea...

Does anyone know how much a humidifier would cost aprox.?

Thanks for the help and tips you guys!

Chi! I hope you're feeling better since you posted this since it looks like you've got tons of recommendations already. I have dry skin all year around because of eczema, so I use a stronger moisturizer like Eucerin creme (Cheryl mentioned this), not Eucerin lotion during the winter. So give Eucerin a try if Susan's Cetaphil doesn't work. Cetaphil works in the spring/summer for me.

There are different humidifiers - some emit warm or cold steam. There are humidifiers for children that look like animals for $35 USD. Would you like this panda one? http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=13966389

I know Air-o-Swiss is a good brand but they are kind of expensive, at least $120 USD.

Aa... Carol it looks so cute! I had no ideda that they made humidifiers shaped like animals, but of course I imagine that there's a market, so why not?

Thanks! I'll look into it!

I feel ya. I had to contend with dry skin too while I was in the US. If you have a bottle of pure honey at home, you might wanna give it try. Massage it on your face for 10 mintues then leave it on for 20 minutes It takes my flakies away and leaves my skin soft and moisturized. :)

p.s. Yep, I make lipbalms like the ones that come in chapstick tubes. I also make them in tinted versions like the lipglosses from Everyday Minerals only a bit sheerer. I was selling some before but the formula then was crappy so had to change it up again. I'm now on my testing stage. If only you guys are near me I would've sent you some already to test these suckers.

I passed on buying the jeans too. I'm saving my shopping money for my slimmer self. :)
I'm seriously contemplating on having my back waxed. LOL.

This was my first year with "winter skin". I didn't know what hit me. I exfoliated like crazy but that only made my skin worse and I started getting all these nasty bumps on my face. BUT I found my cure with Nivea creme. I have combo skin, dry cheeks, oily T-zone. I thought that creme was going to be too greasy for my face. But my skin drank that stuff up. It's pretty cheap too and you can use it on other parts of your body. I bought the little travel size one which was less than $2US. Lasted me throughout California winter. Hope this helps!

oh man i hate it when that happens when the nose-capilary thingy area gets all dry, flaky, itchy, and altogether icky. Even though I live in an extremely warm and humid environment, I definitely get those during the winter when I blow my nose too often.

and lucky you, you get snow! I haven't seen a flake of snow since 4 years ago when it barely snowed on Christmas Eve.
