Having fun

Doesn't she look badass in this picture?

Strike a pose!

I was in the mood for something sweet but didn't quite know what. Besides supermarkets had closed so this is what I came up with:

Pancakes! My bro had been talking about IHOP for a while and since he didn't get to go to NY due to some volcanic activity I decided to make him some. Not the European crêpes but the american version he specified.

Brownie :) Unfortunately I was all out of walnuts and I suspect someone had taken my pecans so I just chopped up some hazelnuts instead. Here served with some sour cream cause I didn't have whipped cream on hand.

Thanks for looking! ^o^

Homemade lasagna

I was waiting in line the other day at my local supermarket when I noticed the woman in front of me had: bread, ham, bananas, bechamel sauce in a carton and milk in her basket. All something that's fairly straightforward in terms of preparation. Then I thought of my own siblings and I. My brother and I both like to cook, we feel at home in a kitchen but as for my sister she tries to avoid that space as much as possible. My sister is quite smart, quick-thinking and very artistic. She paints and draws but she has a very hard time learning languages as opposed to my brother and I. We both seem to have a knack for languages, maybe something we got from our dad.

I'm getting a little sidetracked here but my dad is pretty awesome when it comes to languages, he speaks no less than 6 different dialects of Chinese (to those of you who think it's an accent thing, it's not. It's almost like speaking 6 different languages save for the grammar which is somewhat similar. He also only needs to listen in on people speaking foreign languages a short while to be able to pick up on conversations. That's pretty impressive imo.

But back to the lady where we left her in the supermarket with her basket. I used to be one of those people who bought bechamel sauce and lasagna plates or settled with bread and spread for dinner but that was before I knew any better.

Homemade lasagna is so easy to make. From the bolognese to the bechamel sauce. I even tried making my own pasta plates this time. It was a bit more timeconsuming, what with the refrigerating time and all, so I was scrambling towards the end but the end result was so worth it! Here's how I do it:

(it's for 5-6 people so feel free to make smaller portions. Tbsp=tablespoon tsp=teaspoon)

Bolognese sauce:
onions 3
garlic 1-2 cloves
minced beef 2lbs
(optional 1 dl or 1/3 cup of red wine/cooking wine)
tomatoes 2 cans or 1 lb of fresh
two tbsp of tomato paste
basil 1 tsp dried and 5 stems of fresh
2 pinches of oregano
bayleaves 3-4
Black pepper and salt

-Heat up some olive oil mixed with vegetable oil in a large pot and fry the oinions until translucent. Chop up garlic and add.
(OPTIONAL some people like to add pancetta or bacon here, I usually don't)
-Add the meat and fry it until it slightly changes color. Add a splash of wine and keep cooking until the alcohol is evaporated.
-Toss in tomatoes and add some water aprox. 1 cup. Stir while bringing to a boil.
(OPTIONAL add grated carrots and celery if you wish)
-Add the dry and chopped fresh basil as well as the oregano
-Add the bayleaves, and when it's up to a boil lower the heat and let simmer with a lid for 1 hour. Then turn off heat. (I usually make the bolognese the night before)

Lasagna plates:
Use 1 egg yolk per 2 lbs flour and mix
optionally I like to add an entire egg to it if it's too dry.
-Mix well and knead the dough until smooth. Cover it in wrap and leave in refrigerator for 20 mins.
-Take out and slice the dough thickly, run though the pasta machine on the different settings (usually 4 times is enough)

Bechamel sauce:
Butter 35-50grams/2-3 tbsp (aprox, I don't use measuring tools here)
flour
milk
bayleaves 2
nutmeg
-In a small pot heat up the butter and whisk in the flou. It should be a like a paste with no visible residual butter. On medium heat, add milk little by little wile whisking until the sauce is thick to your liking.
-Add the bayleaves and keep whisking for 1 min
-Add nutmeg whisk it into the blend and remove from heat

Preheat oven on 225 degrees Celsius
In a a large lasagna pan I usually make the layers like this: lasagna plates, bolognese, bechamel, plates, bolognese, grated cheese and then repeat. Sprinkle a large portion of cheese on top.

Now place the lasagna in the already heated oven and after 15 mins turn the heat down to 175 decress Celsius. The high temperature in the beginning is to ensure a golden and slightly crunchy cheese top. After 35mins turn of oven, take out lasagna, serve on plates. Eat!

Bon appetit!

Doll eyes

Hi Lovelies ^_^

It's been a while since I last did a make-up related post so I thought this was a bit overdue. I wanted to do something a little extreme this time, not your regular wear to go outside in the day-time looks.

See, that's what I like about make-up. It can transform the way you look entirely and you can wear as little or as much depending on your mood.

On a daily basis, I tend to wear just a little make-up to make me look less tired. More colorful looks are reserved for a night out in my case. So this was kinda fun for me to do although I wouldn't wear it out to go grocery shopping.

For this "doll" look I wanted to focus on my eyes and lashes.
So for the face that needed to look like "perfect" skin I sweeped a brush with loose powder across my face.
Peachy-pink blush concentrated on the apples of my cheeks.
False lashes on top and bottom lashes.
Semi-colored contacts (optional)
And a light pink lipgloss on lips.

I think I look kinda freaky with all of these things going on at the same time but hey, at least now I'll have an idea for Halloween!

Thanks for looking ^^

Mothers Day

So, for Mothers Day, my sister and I got up pretty early to make dumplings for lunch. We decided to ban my mom from the kitchen for an entire day and have her relax. Actually my sister and I just recently learned how to make dumplings on a trip to Shandong last year to visit some relatives we'd never met before. They didn't believe us when we told them we couldn't make dumplings and they started laughing! Apparently they could make all sorts of delicious treats from the age of 8 because that's apparently how you do it, your mother passes it down to you and so on. Seeing as the only person in our family who could make dumplings was our grandmother and she never taught her kids we all had to depend on her. After her stroke that left her paralyzed in her right half, none of us had had dumplings in ages... until now!

Looks pretty neat on the tray, huh?

All cooked and on plates.

My grandparents enjoying the fruits of our labor!

The one on the left are dehydrated flowers and they can keep for 2-3 years. No need to water or anything. The one on the right have to be watered.

I actually made this cake the night before, it has a chocolate cake bottom with chopped hazelnuts with a thin layer of vanilla cream on it and on top of that is a raspberry-blueberry mousse. As you might be able to see, the mousse wasn't as firm as I would've liked it, it was way too soft. *EPIC FAIL* But it tasted pretty good. My aunt who rarely eats sweet things asked for seconds and ended up scraping and licking the platter!

My grandmother, and my mom on the left with my aunt. My aunt got married quite late and decided not to have any children... Maybe it was after she had been helping my parents raise the three of us that she had had enough! Either way, she's like a second mom to us and we always remember her on Mothers Day.

The tortellini and ravioli with cauliflower puree on top that my sister and brother had prepared for dinner that evening. It was really tasty and everyone ended up in a food coma that evening after a whole day of deliciousness.

So, what did you do for your mother on Mothers Day?

Top chef: Masters season 2

I am totally psyched that they did another season of this show. I have to admit this has got to be one of my favorite cooking shows and I really enjoyed season 1. Anyone else watch this?

The lineup for the semifinale is really rocking this time around, there are some serious heavyweights of the industry participating. I'm really rooting for Jonathan Waxman, Susur Lee, Rick Moonen and Marcus Samuelsson.

In this entry I just wanted to highlight one of the chefs: Susur Lee. For the quickfire challenge he actually got the lowest score from the diners, 2 1/2 stars. You could literally feel his disappointment and anger through the screen but instead of feeling sorry for himself he picked himself up and proceeded on to receving the highest score ever received in the history of Top Chef Masters, a total of 19 1/2 stars. I guess he took his anger and fuelled it into the elimination challenge win. What an awesome comeback!

Even though I don't culinarilly discriminate, I eat almost everything and anything from literally every culinary corner of the world, I feel a sense of pride and joy of having such a skilled and accomplished chef as Susur Lee representing the asians.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you Susur! ^^
